Fluorosis: A Condition Caused by the Over Consumption of Fluoride.

The overconsumption of fluoride through water in major metropolitan waterways, toothpastes, and even dentist offices can lead to a rare condition known as Fluorosis. As of 1989 fluoride has been proven to have the ability to transform healthy cells into cancerous cells as well as to cause detrimental effects on a human bodyÂ’s immune system and bones.

Fluoride is most commonly known because of the cleaning solution that dentist will use on a patients teeth and the fact that fluoride can be consistently found in many different types of toothpastes.  Traces of fluoride can also be found in waterways located in major metropolitan areas as it is believed that if fluoride is added to the water it will benefit the entire city.  However, what is not commonly known is that high dosages of fluoride have been proven to be more harmful to human health rather than beneficial.  Although fluoride is still seen as a positive aid and is still largely used in dentist offices throughout the United States, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has made an effort to reduce the nation’s dependency on fluoride by making a statement that the overconsumption of fluoride can lead to a condition now known as ‘fluorosis.’  Sadly this statement did not gain much media attention which only raised the public’s suspicion.

Dental fluorosis will cause yellow or brown spots to appear around a person’s teeth and gums as well as lead to tooth decay if the proper precautions are not taken care of.  Fluorosis has also been found to have a detrimental effect, similar to that of a poison, on a person’s skin causing symptoms such as dermatitis and eczema to appear.  According to the ‘Clinical Toxicology of Commercial Products’ fluoride has been tested and found to be dramatically more poisonous than lead and only just slightly less poisonous than arsenic.  Other symptoms caused by the overconsumption of fluoride include a weaker immune system, weaker bone marrow and worsened arthritis for individuals who already have preexisting arthritis conditions.  However, the effects of dental fluorosis have been most commonly found in babies possibly due to overexposure of tap water with traces of fluoride.

In 1970 Dr. Dean Burk, head of the Cytochemistry Division at the National Career Institute, predicted that roughly 10,000 people died annually due to fluoride cancer related deaths.  However, Dr. Burk’s prediction was taken lightly but by 1989 the Argonne National Laboratories confirmed that fluoride did indeed have the ability to transform normal cells into cancerous cells.

As of today it is currently a law that major metropolitan areas must submit a measured amount of fluoride into the major waterways annually.  Fortunately though activists groups have been opposed to this idea for decades and have begun to raise much more public awareness about the detrimental effects that the overconsumption of fluoride can cause.  In order to properly prevent the consumption of fluoride however, be sure to have a reverse osmosis filter as this is the only filter to completely remove fluoride from drinking water.  Be sure to not boil the water as this will only concentrate the fluoride within it.
